As many of you know we recently switch from a 12 card to 16 card per-sheet process. What you don't know is that we've also changed our plate stitching code so that it generates plates with the cards from multiple decks onto a single sheet. In this way if you have a deck with 20 cards, and a deck with 12 cards, it will only use 2 sheets of paper instead of 3. We've done the same for the 4x4 boards (6 to a sheet) and the 4x10 boards (3 to a sheet).

This means we'll be using a lot less paper in our printing process. A big game like MERC went from 31 sheets of paper down to 24. That's huge! And that's great for the environment.

We also want to pass this savings along to you. Unfortunately, there's both good and bad news here. I'll start with the bad news, and then finish strong with the good news.

While we were doing the plate stitching rewrite we discovered a bug in our system that meant we were charging less than we should have been. For example, a game with 109 cards, some rules, and some winks was being charged $10.42, but it should have been charged $12.87. You can see that's a fairly large discrepancy.

The other bit of bad news is that we had to change our cutting process in order to correct the errors in cutting you were all seeing. Our first die cutter let us cut an entire stack of cards out of an entire stack of sheets all at once. However, it had accuracy problems. Our new die cutter is basically perfect, but we have to cut one sheet at a time, which takes more time. We used to charge a flat fee of $1.45 for cutting a deck, because we cut the entire deck all at once. Now since we have to cut one sheet at a time, we're including cutting into the cost of the sheet. This means if you have a deck of over 64 cards you'll be paying a bit more than you were before.

Now onto the good news. The first bit of good news is that there is a LOT of good news. You already know about our environmental savings, so let's move on to the cost savings:

  • If you have any boards in your game, you'll see a cost savings on the boards of about $0.60.
  • If you have more than one board in your game, and the boards are of the same size, and the boards are 4x4 or 4x10, you'll see a very substantial savings. For example, if you had 3 4x10 boards in your game, you'll see a savings of about $4.50.
  • If you have a game with a single deck of 36 cards or less, you'll see a small savings of around $0.50 - $0.70.
  • If you have a game with a single deck of 16 cards or less you'll be able to print that deck for as little as $3.17, almost $1.00 cheaper.
  • If you have a game with lots of decks with less than 50 cards in them, you'll likely see a pretty big savings due to the new stitching process.
  • And finally, if you design your game around the new 16 card sheet, rather than the 12 card sheet, you'll get more cards for your dollar.
Once again I must apologize to those of you that our bug and our new cutting policy affects in a negative way. If there were something I could do to not have to charge the increase and still make our venture profitable, I would. To the rest of you who see a price break, enjoy!

Changes like this (both good and bad) are to be expected as things grow and change, especially during the Beta process of any new endeavor like this. Overall I have to say this seems like a good thing for the long run, even if I did see my profit margin drop by about about a quarter on Lootin' Wizards right now (at the introductory price).

I see much good coming out of the switch for games using 4x4 boards as tiles to create a playing area. I can see this possibly being viable now.

This is excellent. Between this and the stickers, you are going to see orders from me soon.

Is there still a charge per deck now, or is it only by sheet?

For example: If my game has 43 cards, there should be 5 cards left on the sheet.

Does that mean I could create a small deck of 5 referance cards with a different back for no additional costs?

Yes you can. There are no longer any per deck fees or per board fees. It's all just a simple per sheet fee.

If I am reading all this right it means people who want to make their Trivia games (with different backs on each card) can, for no extra cost... but it will show up as their game having tons of 1 card decks.

The double sided cards is awesome as is the stickers for tokens.  I am curious if there are any pictures of the stickers, and its great to see so many new features.

This is incredibly amazing news!

My main goal with the game I'm working on is to provide people with a cheap, fun, easy-to-learn rpg card game. I was going to succeed by keeping all the same card backs and including some cards that just said "Items," "Monsters," and so on for all the different type of cards, so then you'd have your upside down stack of monster cards and have a card that said "Monsters" next to it. But now I can have different card backs and still keep it cheap!

This just made my day!
