File Preparation

File preparation is a very important part of any print job. This page should give you the information you need to successfully prepare your files for printing.

Image File Types

TheGameCrafter.com supports three different file types for your uploaded images. We allow for GIF, JPEG, and PNG. However, we do this for convenience not recommendation. The following are the recommended file formats in order of recommendation:

  1. PNG - PNG is rapidly becoming the defacto image standard around the world, and for good reason. It's an amazing file format and is completely supported by nearly every image editing program in the planet.
  2. JPEG - JPEG is a compressed format which actually loses some of it's data as you save it. This produces artifacts on the images and makes it a bad format for print. However, if you turn the image down to minimal compression, then the artifacting is negligible, and will work just fine.
  3. GIF - GIF is common on the web, but is nearly useless in print because it's color range is limited to a maximum of 256 colors.

Image Resolution

When you see an image on a screen, like on this web site, it has 72 DPI or (dots per inch). That's enough for you to see something on a screen and believe it. However, when you print something to paper if you print at 72 DPI the image will look very grainy.

In the print world we use a resolution of at least 300 DPI. And on this site, we recommend all the images you upload for cards and game boards be exactly 300 DPI (no less, no more).

What does this mean to you? Just that you upload your images in the right size, rather than relying on our software to adjust them for you. Here is a list of the sizes you need for the various files:

File Type Pixels DPI Inches
Width Height Width Height
Poker Sized Play Card 825 1125 300 2.75 3.75
Game Board 1275 1275 300 4.25 4.25
Game Board 1275 3075 300 4.25 10.25
Game Board 3075 3075 300 10.25 10.25
Game Board 3075 4875 300 10.25 16.25
Cover Art 800 300 72

Our software will automatically adjust your images for you if you don't upload the correct sizes. However, your images may not look as you intended them to.

Templates

Our template library gives you a great head start on building out your printed game components. Be sure to fully read that page, as well as this one, before you begin production of your cards.

Copyright

Please don't upload content to which you don't hold the copyright. Don't steal other people's games, images, rules, etc. Do the right thing and get permission.

If a copyright violation is reported, the game will be taken offline until the dispute can be resolved. If you see a copyright violation, please contact us and we'll be happy to look into it and take any necessary action.

Documents Files

When you upload documents such as rules, they must be saved as PDFs and the documents must be 8.5"x11" or standard U.S. Letter size.

Next Steps

After you've done your file preparation, you're now ready to upload your printable components.
