Arete: The Philosophy Board Game

A game for Philosophers and admirers of Ancient Philosophy

Philosophy is a way of life and the sweetest of the Muses. She importunes you to seek excellence in virtue and cultivate your body and soul. Explore the Classical and Hellenistic periods of Ancient Greece along with its rich Traditions and charismatic Mythos, as you take part in Dialectical arguments in search of Truth, participate in the bustling civic life of Athens, and travel outside of your Mother City seeking opportunities to exercise your Wisdom and practice your Craft on. Aiding you in your Homeric quest for Socratic virtue are loyal pupils, capricious gods and your soul's affinity with the ordered cosmos. Virtue does not come from contemplation alone, but through the application of Reason to right Action. (Description taken from the game.)

This is a game for students, teachers and enthusiasts of philosophy alike, and plays much like a role-playing game, where each player will adopt the role of an ancient philosopher. The game is won by collecting virtue points through various activities found on the map of Ancient Athens, however, the emphasis lies in exploration of the in-game world and discussion of the topics found in the cards.

Note: The rule book, character cards and bidding mat must be be printed outside of Game Crafters, as the sizes these objects come in are not offered here. As of 11/6/2017, I've uploaded these files to Game Crafter as downloadable content (DLC). If for any reason the DLC is not working for you, please let me know and I will email you the source files. Thank you for your understanding.

P.S. Game Crafter does not give me the email addresses of those who've purchased the game, so please email me at for any questions or conversations; I always like talking to other enthusiasts of ancient philosophy. Thank you!
