What is Flat Chances novelty dice?

Flat Chances are series of handmade decision trees that utilize the randomness of flipping a coin to simulate different dice or other denominations of values.

How do you use Flat Chances dice?

With a Flat Chances decision tree, starting at the center circle flip a coin to navigate to each outer circle to reach your target circle group. Without a decision tree, divide the max number you want as a dice roll into 2 equal groups. If the grouping is not an integer(whole number), share the middle value with both groups to even it out. (I.E. ‘9’ is the max number. Dividing 9 by 2 would result into 4.5 in both groups. The first group being 1-to-4.5 and the second group being 4.5-to-9. Sharing the integer with both groups would make the first group 1-to-5 and the second group 5-to-9.) The first group is heads and the second group is tails. Keep dividing the groups into two equal parts with each flip of the coin until there is only one choice left. Each time if the group is uneven, share the middle value with both groups.

What situations can you use Flat Chance dice?

  • Emergency dice, An unplanned gaming session may need some way to have some dice on hand.
  • Alternate dice, This could help if sometimes a player’s dice is not cutting it.
  • Status dice, This may be a way to have a more impactful player experience by forcing the player use this as a way to introduce a status affect that directly changes how they generate different RNG.
  • Game Theme Dice, The player or game’s worldbuilding theme may focus on flipping a coin as way to produce results.

Optional Mechanics

  • Editing/Customizing, You could change the dice by assigning a different table of values to a Flat Chances’ existing table of results.
  • ‘Team rolls’, because navigating the majority of the Flat Chances decision trees need more that one actions, you can have the multiple players make one flip and then use their combined sequence of coin flips to navigate the decision trees. Sharing the pressure of certain results on the all players whole flipped a coin.
  • Items to change their luck, Having an game item, like a token, to allow editing rolls to change how certain coin flips resulted in heads or tails. Because most Flat Chances need 4 or 5 coin flips to navigate the decision tree, it would be best to allow players to use a game token or game item to change the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd coin flip to change the result of their ‘roll’.

Alternative ways to navigate decision trees

Other than a coin, you can use all sorts of different ways to represent a random choice between heads or tails.

  • With playing cards, you can use the black or red suit cards as a way to represent heads or tails.
  • With dice themselves, you can have even and odd numbers be the representations of heads or tails.
  • You can also apply the even or odd results with a large book by randomly stopping on a page and looking at which tens number place page you landed on.
  • With the help of another person, playing rock/paper/scissors could also represent heads or tails with who wins or losses a hand.
