The Protospiel Online 2023 design challenge runs from Jan 1 2023 - Sep 30 2023. We invite all challenge participants to test designs for this challenge during any or all 3 of our online playtesting conventions this year:

Jan 13-15, May 5-7, & Aug 25-27 2023

This is a community-based challenge with no contest, judging, prizes, or awards. Similar to the goal at our triannual online playtesting conventions, the focus is on connecting with other designers and gamers, trading feedback on design problems, and having fun!

Give a Challenge

Pick out a bits set and mail or pass it to a friend. If you have the bits set before gifting, fill in the relevant blanks on the challenge booklet cover. If shipping the bits set directly, tell the recipient over a call or via text which mechanic and theme you’re challenging them to use.

Get a Challenge

To join the challenge for yourself, choose your own bits set to start with. Then, visit **Protospiel Online Design Challenge - Protospiel Online to join a community of designers participating in this year’s challenge.

If someone hasn’t already challenged you to use a mechanic and theme, as you join the community, an existing member will give you a mechanic and theme of their choice. This, combined with your bits set, will create a unique-to-you challenge to work on for this session.

Complete the Challenge

Use one or both of the theme and mechanic and at least 10 bits from your 20 bit set to create your game. Add any other components you'd like.

Protospiel Online will showcase the games of all online community members who have submitted their progress by the challenge closing date.
