To be a successful snack food company, you have focus on sales. And the best way to increase sales is to get prime placement of your product at the grocery stores (known as "beachfront property" in the industry). And the way to get this placment is to pay top money to the grocery stores. (See Planet Money for more background.)

In Shelved!, each player represents a producer of four snack foods: crackers, chips, candy, and cookies. Each turn, they secretly allocate their funds, choosing to either

1. Make a bid to the grocery store for the privilege to choose where on the shelf each player's product will be located, which will determine their sales.
2. Make a bid to buy an improvement tile to enhance their company.
3. Pay out dividends to earn points.

After all products are placed, players earn income, based on their position on the shelf, the dice rolled for each snack, and the snack's seasonal bonus.

After four seasons (plus a final dividends phase), the player with the most points wins.
