Description

Threat: The Unknown Enemy is a thrilling board game where players work as agents of an agency tasked with protecting the city from supernatural and cosmic threats. As the game progresses, players gain more information about the enemy they face, which could be anything from zombies and vampires to eldritch horrors and cultists. One player may even be a traitor, adding an extra layer of suspense and deception to the game. Can you and your fellow agents uncover the enemy and save the city before it's too late? Play Threat: The Unknown Enemy to find out.

Aspects of the Threat

At the beginning of the game, the Threat is unknown. Each Threat consists of two different, nefarious, Aspects. The Aspects come into play as the players can deduct what kind of effect it has in the world. If the Aspect attempts coordinated attacks, Zombies can be ruled out. If the Threat leaves massive civilian casualties in its wake, we can rule out the Elder Cult.

The Threat Revealed

As the two Aspects come into daylight, the Threat can be identified. Luckily, the Agency has a manual for deducing what kind of entity they are dealing with, the Compendium of Threats! The top-classified document seems to have leaked, as you may download it from this page.

In the game, a round consist of the following phases:

  1. Dark Event phase - The sinister machinations of the Threat assail the city, leaving trail of clues of its true origin.
  2. Agency phase - Each character takes their turn, which includes movement, action, and resisting exposure to the Threat.
  3. Traitor phase - If a traitor is revealed amongst the players, they use their turn to undermine the Agency.
  4. Enemy Activity phase - Minions of the Threat perform malevolent acts, while terror causes people to disappear.

In addition, with 4-6 players, one player might be a Traitor, working for the Threat. But they do not know it from the start! As the clues reveal one at a time, the players can gain more evidence that they are actually traitors. And when at last, all other possibilities are made impossible, their activation code kicks in. Traitors do not exist in each game, but when can you be sure this is not one of those cases?

Threat - The Unknown Enemy was inspired by many other horror games where a dark, desperate fight is mounted against something far too powerful. However, the game is much shorter than other representatives of its genre while still giving a lot of choices as it plays over 13 fast turns or less. The primary replay value comes from the 14 very different kinds of Threats that are randomly chosen, making each game session very different from the other.
