Villages of Midgard addresses the need to mitigate the randomness of dice in several ways:

• Dice rerolls are connected to village upgrades and end of game points. You can always use them, but timing is critical.
• Starting engines don't need big numbers, so its not punishing at the begining.
• Players can spend favor to manipulate dice.
• Sandbox engine building can be tailored to mitigate poor dice rolls or maximize risk/reward. Or more likely, combine the two.
