A Knight’s trial by combat is a dice and card tactical combat game that depicts arena style medieval hand-to-hand fighting.
Synopsis: You are a squire in the King’s army who is ready to obtain Knighthood. To finally reach this goal you will need to accomplish one last test: Trial by combat. You must fight in non-lethal combat against six veteran Knights. If you can knockout all six Knights before they surround you or knock you out, you win and obtain Knighthood.
Components:
Game card
Dice = [1 Red die, 1 White die, 2 Yellow dice, 5 Black dice, and 6 Blue dice]
Setup:
Place the game card in front of you with the white “Squire” die on the center red shield with 6 showing.
Place six blue dice “Knights” on the six outside white boxes numbered 1 thru 6, all showing 6.
Place the red die, two yellow dice, and five black dice in front of you.
The game is now ready to play.
Game Play
Each round will consist of five phases where you will be fighting up to six Knights at a time using three different tactics:
1 = Push a Knight back
3 = Defend against damage
6 = Attack for damage
Phase 1 - Roll the dice
Roll the red, yellow, and black dice. If the red die equals one then re-roll it. If you roll doubles on the yellow dice or either die matches the white ‘Squire’ die, increase the red die by one; 6 is the max. If any black dice match the white ‘Squire’ die, adjust the red die down by the number of dice that match it. If the red die goes below, one then set the die aside till next round.
• If any black dice match a yellow die, you can change those black dice to a 1, 3, or 6 then set them aside.
• If any black dice end up as Doubles, you can change them to 1’s and set them aside.
• If any black dice end up as Three-of-a-kind, you can change any of them to 1’s or 3’s and set them aside.
• If any black dice end up as Four-of-a-kind, you can change any of them to 1’s, 3’s or 6’s and set them aside.
Phase 2 - Deciding which Knights to push back
Place any black dice with a 1 next to a blue ‘Knight’ die on the game card. Set the back dice with 3’s and 6’s in front of you for later use.
Phase 3 - Knight’s advance
The number on the red die represents how many advances the Knights can make this round. Roll the yellow die, each roll will correspond to the number on the game card for that Knight to advance one space; decrease the red die by one. Continue rolling till the red die equals zero.
If a Knight’s number is rolled again, the Knight will advance one more space. A Knight can only advance next to the red shield and not on it. As Knights are removed, the position roll changes: As Knights are removed from the game, they will leave behind empty spaces, when this happens just pick the next Knight to the right of that Knight moving clock-wise.
Phase 4 - Initial Reaction
If you placed a black die with a 1 next to a Knight you can push that Knight back one space as long as they are not on the outer shield space. If a Knight ends its movement adjacent to the white ‘Squire’ die, you have two options to deal with the Knight: • If you have a black die with a 3 in front of you, you can use it to defend against the point of damage and negate the attack. • If you have a black die with a 6 in front of you, you can use it to attack the Knight for one point of damage but a Knight can only be attacked when he is in the red or black space. If you attack the Knight for a point of damage, lower that Knight’s blue dice value by one. If the number on the blue die goes below 1, remove that die from the game card, that Knight has been knocked out. If you end up knocking out all six Knights you win the game.
Phase 5 - Knight attack results
If a Knight ends its movement adjacent to the white ‘Squire’ die and the attack is not defended against, lower the white die by one and move the Knight back one space. If the white die ever goes below 1, you are knocked out and the game is over.
Repeat each round until a win or lose condition is met.
