Description

The Blackwater Wheel

A game of territory, capture, and the move you never saw coming.

The Blackwater Wheel is a two-player abstract strategy game played across an intricate 9×9 board divided among the Zodiac, Planets, Elements, and three mysterious Wheel spaces.

The rules are simple. The board is not.

Players take turns placing stones, building positions and surrounding opposing pieces through orthogonal flanking. Trap an opponent’s stone between two of your own and it is captured and permanently removed. But every placement changes the geometry of the board. An empty square can be denied. A secure position can become vulnerable. A move made to complete your own pattern may give your opponent exactly the opening they were waiting for.

To win, you must establish simultaneous control of at least 2 Zodiac squares, 2 Planet squares, and 2 Element squares — and you must have drawn blood by capturing at least one opposing stone.

There are no dice. No cards. No hidden information. Both players see the same board.

What separates them is what they see coming next.

Element territory is scarce. Home Wheels provide protected anchors. The neutral center Wheel can become a powerful tactical battleground, but controlling it alone brings no victory. And because players cannot voluntarily place a stone into a position already flanked by their opponent, experienced players can weaponize empty space itself—creating walls, closing routes, and forcing the battle toward increasingly valuable territory.

A small ruleset produces a game of position, tempo, sacrifice, denial, and capture.

The official rules also include three ways to play:

STANDARD — The definitive Blackwater Wheel experience: 2 Zodiac + 2 Planet + 2 Element + at least one capture.

COMPETITIVE — Adds the Pie/Swap Rule, forcing the opening player to make a first move they would be willing to surrender.

SAFE — An advanced positional challenge in which every one of your surviving stones must be safe from immediate capture when you claim victory.

LONG GAME — Raises the objective to 3-3-3 + capture for a longer, more demanding struggle for the board.

With only 18 stones per player and one placement per turn, every stone matters.

The symbols may be ancient.

The strategy is entirely yours.
