Pit (some of) the jokes made by my friends in elementary school against eachother in a method similar to how I used to think Pokemon was played. (No affiliaton with Pokemon or How To Train Your Dragon)
Rules:
Setup: Each player shuffles their preprepared deck and puts out 1-6 cards face down from the top ("prize cards") on their right. Players should both have the same number of prize cards. (4 for standard play, or 2 if you don't have enough cards for 4) The goal is to empty this pile by defeating your opponent's Jokemon before they empty theirs. Then each player draws 5 cards, and, if they have a Jokemon, simultaniously with the other player puts it in front of them. This is there active Jokemon. Leave room for 5 more cards below it. (their "bench")
On Your Turn: Draw a card. If you ever would draw a card but your deck is empty, just don't draw a card.
Then play any number of cards from your hand. When you play a:
Item-do what it says, and then put it in your discard pile. Jokemon-put it on your bench (you can't have more than 5 Jokemon on your bench at a time). Skill-"attach" it to (put it behind) one of your Jokemon. The Jokemon gains the effect while the card is in play. Tool-see skill.
Jokemon can't (usually) have more than 1 skill and 1 tool attached to them.
A card is labelled in the upper right. Jokemon have HP instead of a label.
Then attack or retreat, unless this is the first turn of the game.
To attack, use one of the "moves" in the text box of your active Jokemon. Most Jokemon have 2 moves, identified by the larger text. Deal damage to your opponent's active Jokemon equal to the number on the right of the name, and then do what it says below. If any Jokemon ever has taken more damage than it's "HP" (upper right) it is put in it's owner's discard pile and it's owner's opponent takes their top prize card and puts it in their hand. If that was their last prize card, they win! If it was their active Jokemon, one of their benched Jokemon becomes their new active Jokemon.
Instead of attacking, you may "retreat" which means swapping your active Jokemon with one of the Jokemon on your bench.
Then it is your opponent's turn.
