Pure Skate is a card and dice game built around unique, personal tours of trial, skill, and luck.

Pure Skate features strategy, luck mitigation, while allowing hard moves against the competition— all while simulating the thrill of skating.

Market Setup

Shuffle Route and Obstacle decks. Locate Dice and 1st Player Card.

Reveal cards face-up equal to the number of players (1-5) for each deck, including the Control Deck.

Create a row of each card next to the respective face down decks. This is called the Market, and represents strategic options for drawing cards in the Vision Phase.

Players will determine first player by choosing a color, and rolling 2 dice, looking for the highest sum. That person is the first player and receives the first player card.

Players proceed in a clockwise turn order, collecting 1 Route Card from the market, refreshing the market from the draw decks as cards are removed. Players may blind draw from decks in the market, when they would prefer to not take one of the face-up cards. This card is set into play in front of them.

Goal Deck Setup

Shuffle Goal Deck and reveal 2 goals in a 1-3 player game, or 3 goals in a 4-5 player game. Return the rest to the box. Collect your Goal Disk in your color.

5 Total Goal Cards It’s a Race! - First Place. First to finish 4 Routes, +10 Points. It’s a Delivery! - Time Limit. Complete 2 Route Cards in 3 turns, +5 Points. It’s a Dare! - Highest amount of Difficulty on Scored Cards, +10 Points. It’s a Break! - Highest amount of Movement on Scored Cards, +15 Points. It’s a Miracle! - Highest amount of Obstacles Cards scored, +10 Points.

Players that achieve goals may place their disks on Goal Cards, and receive points at the end of the game. In the event of a tie, multiple players may score a goal, and earn full points. “It’s a Race!” might be scored by multiple players if they each finish 4 Route Cards on the same round.

Stance Deck Setup

Take the 7 Stance Cards and lay them face up where all players can see. Collect your Stance Cube in your selected color. During the Stance Phase, players will be placing or shifting their cubes in order to activate Stance Cards. Cards are limited to one or two spaces depending on the number of players. Each space can hold 1 cube per round.

Phases of Play

Game-play is played in a series of phases. Vision Phase - Drawing Cards. Stance Phase - Picking a Stance. Drive Phase - Playing Cards. Roll Phase - Rolling Dice. Resolution Phase - Collect Markers and Score Cards.

Vision Phase - Drawing Cards

First player, proceeding clockwise, draws 1 face-up card from Market, or blind draws from the top of a deck. The player adds this card to their hand, and may play these cards in the Drive Phase. They immediately refresh the market with replacement cards should they collect a face up card. The Route Card they received during Setup of the game is considered already in play.

Vision Phase Limitations Players have a card limit of 6 cards per card type, including active Route Cards and scored Obstacle Cards and cards in their hand. Players may draw cards over this limit, and discard down to 6 cards. Should a player score over 6 obstacle cards, they may choose which cards to keep and score, and discard the rest.

Stance Phase - Picking a Stance

First player, proceeding clockwise, moves their player Stance Cube on one of the available stance cards. These cards are limited in availability based on the player count with one space for 1-3 players, and another space for 4-5 players. They enable players to speed through Route Cards, collect more cards, determine player order, and defeat obstacles. These cards enable players to temporarily tweak the rules of the game in their favor.

7 Total Stance Cards

Dash - When in the Roll Phase, add 1 difficulty to the total difficulty from the route, dice, or any obstacle cards. In the event you don’t wipe from having 3 difficulty, move 2 additional spaces.

Rude - On your Drive Phase, you may play 2 cards from your hand on any player’s route instead of 1. Great Stance for making a big play.

Leader - Immediately take 1 card of any type from the market and refresh or discard as appropriate. During the Resolution Phase, collect the 1st Player Card from another player. The player who holds the 1st Player Card cannot choose the Leader Stance.

Crusing - This space has an equal amount of spaces regardless of player count. The first space, Focus, allows the player to ignore all difficulty this round. The player in the focus space will not collect their Stance Cube in the Resolution Phase, but will forced to shift it down to the Blast space for the next round of play.

The Blast space requires the player to roll 2 dice and activate each dice separately during the Roll Phase. It is a risky stance with an increased probability of reaching 3 difficulty from dice rolls and thus wasting a round of movement. The player will collect their cube, as normal, after using the Blast space, in the Resolution Phase.

Control - Immediately collect 1 Control Card from the Market. These cards may be discarded to mitigate the difficulty on routes or rolls by 1. During the Roll Phase, the player will be able to discard 1 Obstacle card that was played on their route. This card goes into a discard pile. Should the market run out, shuffle the discards back into the draw decks.

Freestyle - When in the Roll Phase, remove 1 difficulty to the total difficulty from the route, dice, or any obstacle cards. In the event you don’t wipe from having 3 difficulty, move 1 additional space.

Tricky - Immediately collect 1 Obstacle Card from the Market. Immediately play 1 Obstacle Card to any player’s route. These cards are useful for scoring points while risking failure, or stopping another player from completing a route for that round.

Drive Phase - Playing Cards

First player, proceeding clockwise, plays a card on any player’s active route. A player may swap one of their own existing, active Route Card with a Route Card in their hand. Alternatively they may add additional Route Cards, or Obstacles to any player’s route. The Drive phase consists of players determining their journey, be it fleeing the police through a crowded party or skating into a construction zone with steady control.

The Rude Stance allows players to play multiple cards this round. Route Cards are played in path the player chooses, with connection points up, down, left and right. Obstacles must be played on a player’s currently active route. The active route is the route with the next available solid space. Faint grey movement spaces between cards do not count.

Roll Phase - Rolling Dice

Did You Wipe Out? First player, proceeding clockwise, rolls 1 die, unless on the Blast Space. Players first determine if they have wiped out from reaching 3 total Difficulty from Route Cards, Stance Cards, Dice, and Obstacle Cards. Players may discard Control Cards to reduce their difficulty by 1. A player in the Control Stance may discard one obstacle played on their active route. Some high point value Route Cards default to 3 difficulty, and require some form of mitigation to clear. If a player wipes out, they will ignore skating forward for all movement this round.

Roll of 1 adds 1 Difficulty. Roll of 2 adds 2 Difficulty. Roll of 6 removes 1 Difficulty.

Let’s Skate! If a player has not wiped out, they proceed to move their Meeple on Route Cards, the total number of spaces on the dice rolled, applying any modifiers from Stances and Obstacles. A roll of 1, moves 1 space. A roll of 3, moves 3 spaces. Players ignore faint, transparent, spaces on the Route Card, and continue until they have no solid white spaces to proceed onto. Players then go onto any free half-space, or connection points around the Route Card.

If the last solid space on a Route Card is passed in this way, stop and add 1 route card to your hand, and replenish the removed card from the Market. Immediately proceed to play any Route Card from your hand onto the connection space that your Meeple resides.

Resolution Phase - Score Cards and Collect Markers

Scoring Obstacles First player, proceeding clockwise, checks to see if they passed any route cards containing Obstacle Cards. If they succeeded in this way, they keep those obstacles to score at the end of the game. Obstacle Cards that actively prevented players from completing a route by blocked movement are instead scored by the hostile players that deployed the cards. Obstacle Cards played by the Route Card owner, that were on unfinished Routes, are discarded into a discard pile. Obstacle Cards from hostile players that didn’t trigger, are discarded into a discard pile.

Is it the End? The game ends if any player achieves 5 Route Cards in a 2 - 3 player game, or 4 Route Cards in a 4 - 5 player game.

Solo play consists of seeking a high score in achieving 6 route cards within a time limit of 7 rounds.

If the game ended, determine if any players achieved goal cards. Add the points from Route Cards completed, Obstacle Cards Scored, and Goals achieved. In the event of a tie, the player with the highest difficulty on routes and obstacles wins. The second tiebreaker is longest distance of movement spaces. Sometimes having a journey is better than having efficiency.

Collect materials if there’s still some road ahead. Players who landed on the Leader Stance, collect the first player card, and will be first player next round. Players who landed on the “Focus” space on the Crusing Stance, shift their cube down to “Blast” instead of collecting it. All other players collect their cube, and proceed to the Vision Phase of the next round. Discarded cards can be shuffled back into Market Decks if Markets are depleted.
