Description

Sequence: Ancient History

This game includes events from the Big Bang until 632 CE. It spans Year 7 History in the Australian Curriculum and most Australian state curricula.

Rules of the game

1-6 players. Playing time 15 minutes.

Sequence: Ancient History is a card game played using 72 cards. Each card has a historical event on both sides, with the year that it occurred and a brief explanation of the event on only one side.

Deal five cards to each player. Take the next card from the deck and turn it “face up” (date showing). Leave the rest of the deck as a pick-up pile. The youngest player starts and play goes clockwise. Players take turns placing a card from their hand in a row on the table face down. They place it before, after, or in between other cards on the table, depending on when they think the event happened - they try to place it in the correct chronological order. After placing the card, the player turns the card face up, showing the date. If the card was placed in correct chronological order, the card stays in place and the next person has their turn. If it was placed incorrectly, it is placed in the correct order, but the person who played it must take another card. The first player to get rid of all of their cards by placing them correctly wins. If no one has placed all their cards correctly by the time the pick-up pile runs out, the person with the least cards left in their hand wins.

Additional rules

• Try experimenting with players starting with a different number of cards. In general, starting with less cards makes the game easier and starting with more cards makes the game harder. • Try putting players in teams of two or more students • Introduce a timer • Introduce decks of cards from other Sequence history games (Sequence: Middle Ages, Sequence: Premodern History, Sequence: Modern History)

Cause and effect

Give a group the whole deck of cards. They must look through all the cards and work out which events were causes of other events, and place them together. There may be multiple causes or effects of an event.

Significance

Pick 10 cards at random from the deck. Have students rank them in order of significance. Students could use Partington’s model of significance: Importance – how important was it to people living at the time? Profundity – how deeply were people’s lives affected? Quantity – how many lives were affected? Durability – for how long were people affected? Relevance – how relevant is it to the present?

Primary Source Evidence

Choose one or more cards from the deck. Find a primary source reference that shows that this event occurred (this might be quite difficult for some of the earliest dates).

Categorising

Get students to sort the deck into different piles based on various categories, e.g.:

• Location – which continent did the event occur on? (have a separate pile for ‘everywhere’) • Topics – for example Sequence: Ancient History could be divided into cosmology, India, Egypt, Australia, China, Greece, Rome. • Type of event: for example – political, technological, religious, environmental, economic, military, social • Empathy based categories: for example – a negative event, a positive event, a ‘neutral’ event
